Who, Why and What: The 3 W’s of VictoryLab
(c) VictoryLab Inc. 2018
As we at VictoryLab continue to raise awareness for mental health and develop a voice through our work, it’s important to look back and remember why we do what we do. Every organization starts with an idea, and VictoryLab is no different. To discover what has shaped our organization, we need to look into the who, why and what of VictoryLab.
What is VictoryLab: What do we do?
VictoryLab is an evidence-based performance and mental health app that is available for different organizations like businesses, human service organizations and sports teams. Individuals are able to assess their mental health and their environment, and organizations are able to see this anonymous feedback from their team. Users who are struggling are also able to communicate anonymously, in-the-moment with licensed therapists directly through the app - when they need it most.
Why VictoryLab: What started it all?
The inspiration behind the VictoryLab app comes from our CEO and founder, David Johnson, and his time working in the education system where he witnessed the mental health struggles students and athletes were facing. Seeing this firsthand, the need for change was obvious and David started a conversation which involved Dr. Brandy Ladd and Andrew Ladd, who eventually helped create the foundation for VictoryLab.
Why VictoryLab: What drives us to do what we do?
We at VictoryLab often remind ourselves of the why behind our organization, because it’s the driving factor that pushes us towards doing what we do. Research shows that suicide accounts for 24% of all deaths among 15-24 year olds, and 16% among 25-44 year olds. This number only continues to rise, and every day, individuals are looking for support. What we know is that smartphone technology is one of the best ways to support those who are in need, as it’s fast, direct, and can remain anonymous. Providing support for anyone who is struggling with mental health issues has a lot to do with the why we do what we do. With the stigma surrounding mental health, it’s difficult to reach out and admit you’re not okay. What we believe is that a mobile app like VictoryLab helps reduce some of that pressure and provides anonymity, so that individuals feel no shame or discomfort when reaching out for support.
Why VictoryLab: What are we working towards?
After spending time in the education system and coaching athletic teams, David took the step towards creating VictoryLab, looking to help those who are struggling in silence. Acknowledging and understanding our roots is what keeps VictoryLab focused on our main goal, which is to provide a platform of support for those in need and help organizations make informed decisions on mental health programs and resources based on real-time data. The future goal for our organization is that VictoryLab will become a part of human resource packages for all businesses and organizations. We strive towards unmasking the stigma surrounding mental health and letting people know that it’s okay to not be okay. The “why” behind VictoryLab is what motivates us to do what we do, and we know that we will never lose sight of the importance behind our “why’.
